How are patients attributed to an NPI?

Problem

Patients are assigned to a specialist.

Patients are currently unassigned

Patients are assigned to different providers than expected.

Solution

The assignment algorithm looks at the data from the quarterly assignment files to determine which providers the patient has seen most often. If the provider with the most visits is indicated to be a primary provider from the TIN/NPI Management, then the patient will be assigned to that provider.

Patients may also be assigned manually using Step 6a in the TIN/NPI management center or by changing patients one at a time in the TIN/NPI Management Review tool.
